A leather-wrapped tube just over ten centimetres tall, a screen, three buttons and up to 40 W, the Voopoo Drag H40 looks every inch a pocket device.

That small frame hides a more technical pod than it first appears. It fires only from a button, takes a wide family of coils and offers two ways to set the power. Out in town, a handful of habits separate a smooth experience from a pod quietly heating up at the bottom of a bag.

The Drag H40 at a glance, the short answer for vaping on the go

The Drag H40 is a Voopoo pod mod with a built-in 1500 mAh battery and 5 to 40 W of adjustable output. It takes the PnP Pod II cartridge and coils from the PnP platform, from 0.3 to 3 ohms. Supplied with two open-draw coils, it suits restricted direct-to-lung vaping and switches to a tight draw with a coil bought separately.

For use away from home, three settings matter most: the 2 ml cartridge sold in the UK, a coil chosen for its draw and its nicotine ceiling, and the button lock before the device goes into a pocket.

A 104.5 mm tube with a screen and safety cut-outs

Unless stated otherwise, the specifications here come from Voopoo’s official product page. Measurements, button combinations and charging time, which the brand does not publish, come from retailer manuals and reviews, and are kept only where two of them agree.

The device stands 104.5 mm tall and 26.1 mm deep. Its body pairs zinc alloy with a leather wrap, in a cylindrical shape that sits upright in an inside jacket pocket. It rolls around more than a flat bar such as the Argus G2 Mini, another Voopoo pod in our gear section, but it fills the hand more fully.

The 0.54 inch OLED screen shows, among other things, the wattage and a puff counter. Six electronic protections cut the power in case of overheating, an atomiser short circuit, overcharging, low battery, over-current or an overlong firing.

Smart or RBA, setting the Drag H40 power

The Drag H40 has two power modes, and the choice mostly comes down to how much time you want to spend adjusting it. Three quick presses of the fire button switch from one to the other.

Smart mode, automatic wattage

In Smart mode, the device reads the resistance of the fitted coil and picks a suitable wattage on its own. It is the simplest option when out, since swapping coils needs no further adjustment.

RBA mode, manual wattage from 5 to 40 W

RBA mode lets you choose the wattage with the plus and minus buttons, anywhere from 5 to 40 W. The figure has to stay within the range printed on the coil, otherwise the wick heats up without enough liquid and tastes burnt.

Which PnP coil to fit in the Drag H40

The kit ships with the PnP-VM3 at 0.45 ohm, already installed, and the PnP-TW30 at 0.3 ohm. Both aim at an open draw, even though the PnP platform also covers tight mouth-to-lung vaping. The coil therefore sets the vaping style far more than the device does.

The two coils in the box

The PnP-VM3 runs between 25 and 35 W for a semi-open draw (the same Voopoo page also gives 25 to 32 W), the PnP-TW30 between 28 and 36 W for a looser, airier pull. At these settings, battery and liquid run down faster than with a tight-draw coil, worth remembering when far from a socket.

Tight-draw coils, sold separately

For mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping, where the vapour is held in the mouth before being inhaled, the platform includes the PnP-TM2 at 0.8 ohm, from 12 to 18 W, and the PnP-TR1 at 1.2 ohm, from 10 to 15 W. A spare MTL drip tip, narrower than the standard one, comes in the box to complete that setup.

A nicotine ceiling for every coil

Voopoo pairs each coil with a maximum nicotine strength. Open-draw coils are intended for lower-strength liquids, tight-draw coils for the stronger ones.

In the UK, nicotine e-liquid is capped at 20 mg/ml and sold in bottles of no more than 10 ml. Every UK strength therefore sits within the limits of the tight-draw coils and the VM3, while the TW30 in the box is only rated up to 10 mg/ml. Strength goes hand in hand with the PG/VG balance, as our guide to choosing a PG/VG ratio on the go explains.

PnP Pod II cartridge, why it holds 2 ml in the UK

The PnP Pod II cartridge holds 5 ml in the standard kit and 2 ml in the TPD kit. UK rules, inherited from the European Tobacco Products Directive, limit refillable tanks and cartridges for nicotine e-liquid to 2 ml, so the TPD version is the one meant for the British market. Listings that quote 5 ml describe the standard kit, and the actual capacity is printed on the cartridge packaging.

Filling happens from the side, under a silicone plug, once the cartridge is lifted off the battery. Outdoors, it is easier to fill while seated, with the cartridge held upright, then press the plug back flat before refitting it. The box may contain either the older or the newer version of the cartridge, and both work.

Locking the Drag H40 before it goes in a pocket

With the updated PnP Pod II cartridge, the button is the only way to fire the device. The Drag H40 never fires on the draw, and that detail changes how it should be carried.

A fire button pressed by keys, a wallet or the bottom of a bag heats the coil while nobody is vaping. Locking it becomes the first thing to do when putting the device away.

Five quick presses of the fire button switch the pod on. Pressing the fire and plus buttons together locks or unlocks it, and the same move with the minus button resets the puff counter. Once locked, the device can travel in any pocket.

Charging the pod away from home

The 1500 mAh battery charges through a USB-C port, and a cable comes in the box. Allow around 90 minutes for a full charge, depending on how flat the battery was to begin with.

Set above 30 W, the pod drains its battery faster than a tight-draw device. A short cable kept for the pod, among the vape accessories for vaping on the go, saves borrowing the phone charger, and the built-in battery means no loose cell rattling around a pocket.

FAQ

These questions come up on most pages that cover the pod. The answers rely on the same sources as the rest of this review.

What comes in the Drag H40 box?

The device, a PnP Pod II cartridge, the pre-installed PnP-VM3 coil, a PnP-TW30 coil, a spare MTL drip tip, a USB-C cable, a user manual and a PnP platform card.

How does the Drag H40 differ from the Drag H40 Pro?

The H40 Pro keeps the 5 to 40 W range but moves to a 2450 mAh battery, a 0.72 inch TFT screen and PnP X cartridges. Its TPD version ships with 0.6 and 0.8 ohm coils.

How do you adjust the airflow on the Drag H40?

By rotating the cartridge on the battery, which carries two air inlets with stepless adjustment. The setting works alongside the choice of drip tip, standard or MTL.

Which colours are available?

Voopoo lists eight, Silvery White, Snow Blue, Pink, Green, Gun Metal, Black, Sky Blue and Modern Red.

Will a PnP coil bought for another Voopoo pod fit?

Yes, as long as its packaging carries the PnP name and its resistance sits between 0.3 and 3 ohms. The PnP X cartridges used by the H40 Pro belong to a separate range and should not be confused with the PnP Pod II.

Drag H40, our verdict for city vaping

The Drag H40 brings together what a pocket pod should offer, a compact tube, a built-in battery and USB-C charging, with the flexibility of a very wide coil platform. In return it asks for a little method, with a button to lock before putting it away, a 2 ml cartridge in its UK form and a coil picked for its draw and nicotine strength.

For a tight draw, the TM2 or the TR1 are bought separately. With those settings in place, the Drag H40 keeps pace with city vaping, and our guide to the best compact pod vapes for city use sets it against other pocket formats, in a gear section that follows how travel-friendly pods evolve.
